Where Can We Go When We've Ruined Earth? These Floating Cities

At first glance, they look like a couple of giant inflatable garden chairs that have washed out to sea. But they are, apparently, the ultimate solution to rapidly rising sea levels.

This computer-generated image shows two floating cities, each with enough room for 50,000 inhabitants.

Based on the design of a lilypad, they could be used as a permanent refuge for those whose homes have been covered in water. Major cities including London, New York and Tokyo are seen as being at huge risk from oceans which could rise by as much as 3ft by the end of this century. read more

Really, Like I Didn't Know That Already

If someone you know can't ever quite get your snide remarks, there might actually be something wrong with them. You see, the inability to understand sarcasm has been linked with brain injuries (primarily to the right side of the brain) and dementia. So buck up, it doesn't mean your friends are stupid, it just means that in the grand evolutionary scheme they wouldn't have lasted long. How wonderful (sarcasm intended)! read more

Taking Prisoners

The Economist lists the places where hostages have been taken by terrorists or insurgents in the year 2007.

The graph is disturbing in one immediate respect, and it reveals a fatal flaw in the methods and actions of the United States.

That it comes out on Independence Day, when federal courts are granting further power to the government instead of the people, is even more disturbing.

Karl Rove Refuses to Appear Before House Judiciary Panel

John Bresnahan writes on the Politico:

Karl Rove, former White House deputy chief of staff and President Bush's top political adviser, is refusing to appear before the House Judiciary Committee to testify on "politicization" within the Justice Dept. Rove had been scheduled to appear next Thursday, July 10.

Rove's refusal to respond to a Judiciary Committee subpoena drew a stern response from Judiciary Committee Chairman John Conyers (D-Mich.) and Rep. Linda Sanchez (D-Calif.), chairwoman of the Commercial and Administrative Law subcommittee.

"We want to make clear that the subcommittee will convene as scheduled and expects Mr. Rove to appear, and that a refusal to appear in violation of the subpoena could subject Mr. Rove to contempt proceedings, including statutory contempt under federal law and proceedings under the inherent contempt authority of the House of Representatives," Conyers and Sanchez wrote in a letter to Rove's attorney, Robert Luskin. read more

U.S. Spies Want a Second Life of Their Own

First, American spooks said they wanted to scour Second Life and other virtual worlds for terrorists. Then, they said that kids who hang out in those digital spaces may be unfit to join the intelligence community. Now, the country's spies want to build a Second Life of their own. And they want it to have a time machine.

The project, dubbed "A-SpaceX," is designed to create a host of "synthetic worlds" where intelligence analysts can not only share data with one another, but "also with themselves and their previous states of thought about a problem. Analysts will be able to explore their own past thinking about the data as well as enabling the proactive exploration of how that data might change in the future," according to a military announcement... read more

Guantánamo Interrogations Inspired by Korean War Chinese Torture Manual, Used on American Soldiers

SCOTT SHANE writes in the New York Times:

The military trainers who came to Guantánamo Bay in December 2002 based an entire interrogation class on a chart showing the effects of “coercive management techniques” for possible use on prisoners, including “sleep deprivation,” “prolonged constraint,” and “exposure.”

What the trainers did not say, and may not have known, was that their chart had been copied verbatim from a 1957 Air Force study of Chinese Communist techniques used during the Korean War to obtain confessions, many of them false, from American prisoners.

The recycled chart is the latest and most vivid evidence of the way Communist interrogation methods that the United States long described as torture became the basis for interrogations both by the military at the base at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba, and by the Central Intelligence Agency.

Some methods were used against a small number of prisoners at Guantánamo before 2005, when Congress banned the use of coercion by the military. The C.I.A. is still authorized by President Bush to use a number of secret “alternative” interrogation methods. read more

'Believe Me, It’s Torture' — Christopher Hitchens Undergoes Waterboarding

Christopher Hitchens writes in Vanity Fair:

Here is the most chilling way I can find of stating the matter. Until recently, “waterboarding” was something that Americans did to other Americans. It was inflicted, and endured, by those members of the Special Forces who underwent the advanced form of training known as sere (Survival, Evasion, Resistance, Escape). In these harsh exercises, brave men and women were introduced to the sorts of barbarism that they might expect to meet at the hands of a lawless foe who disregarded the Geneva Conventions. But it was something that Americans were being trained to resist, not to inflict.

Exploring this narrow but deep distinction, on a gorgeous day last May I found myself deep in the hill country of western North Carolina, preparing to be surprised by a team of extremely hardened veterans who had confronted their country’s enemies in highly arduous terrain all over the world. They knew about everything from unarmed combat to enhanced interrogation and were going to show me as nearly as possible what real waterboarding might be like.

Augmented Reality

One step closer to freeing the scheming internet behemoth monster from its computer prison. CNN:

"Some wish they could link outside of Web browsers. One blogger wrote she wants to "right-click" on people to discreetly learn more about them. (This after an event where she ignored someone she admires, not realizing who he was.)

A few emerging technologies aim to make more objects — both in real life and in computers — behave like hyperlinks. An upcoming version of the program Hyperwords, now limited to web browsers, will work with any open window on your computer."

U.S. Escalates Covert Iran Missions

In this frightening interview with Al Jazeera, Seymour Hersh sums up his latest New Yorker article concerning the escalation of covert U.S. missions against Iran. He ends by explaining that if Obama is elected, Bush will invade Iran on the eve of leaving office, while if McCain wins, Bush will hold off and allow McCain to do the honors.

Is A New Space Race On? Is Helium 3 China's Hidden Lunar Agenda?

The Daily Galaxy writes:

Earlier this year, shortly after Russia claimed a vast portion of the Arctic sea floor, accelerating an international race for the natural resources as global warming opens polar access, China has announced plans to map "every inch" of the surface of the Moon and exploit the vast quantities of Helium-3 thought to lie buried in lunar rocks as part of its ambitious space-exploration program.

Ouyang Ziyuan, head of the first phase of lunar exploration, was quoted on government-sanctioned news site ChinaNews.com describing plans to collect three dimensional images of the Moon for future mining of Helium 3: "There are altogether 15 tons of helium-3 on Earth, while on the Moon, the total amount of Helium-3 can reach one to five million tons."

"Helium-3 is considered as a long-term, stable, safe, clean and cheap material for human beings to get nuclear energy through controllable nuclear fusion experiments," Ziyuan added. "If we human beings can finally use such energy material to generate electricity, then China might need 10 tons of helium-3 every year and in the world, about 100 tons of helium-3 will be needed every year." read more
