At first glance, they look like a couple of giant inflatable garden chairs that have washed out to sea. But they are, apparently, the ultimate solution to rapidly rising sea levels. This computer-generated image shows two floating cities, each with enough room for 50,000 inhabitants.Based on the design of a lilypad, they could be used as a permanent refuge for those whose homes have been covered in water. Major cities including London, New York and Tokyo are seen as being at huge risk from oceans which could rise by as much as 3ft by the end of this century.

You see, the inability to understand sarcasm has been linked with brain injuries (primarily to the right side of the brain) and dementia. So buck up, it doesn't mean your friends are stupid, it just means that in the grand evolutionary scheme they wouldn't have lasted long. How wonderful (sarcasm intended)!

SCOTT SHANE writes in the New York Times:The military trainers who came to Guantánamo Bay in December 2002 based an entire interrogation class on a chart showing the effects of "coercive management techniques" for possible use on prisoners, including "sleep deprivation," "prolonged constraint," and "exposure."What the trainers did not say, and may not have known, was that their chart had been copied verbatim from a 1957 Air Force study of Chinese Communist techniques used during the Korean War to obtain confessions, many of them false, from American prisoners. The recycled chart is the latest and most vivid evidence of the way Communist interrogation methods that the United States long described as torture became the basis for interrogations both by the military at the base at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba, and by the Central Intelligence Agency. Some methods were used against a small number of prisoners at Guantánamo before 2005, when Congress banned the use of coercion by the military. The C.I.A. is still authorized by President Bush to use a number of secret "alternative" interrogation methods.

Christopher Hitchens writes in Vanity Fair:Here is the most chilling way I can find of stating the matter. Until recently, "waterboarding" was something that Americans did to other Americans. It was inflicted, and endured, by those members of the Special Forces who underwent the advanced form of training known as sere (Survival, Evasion, Resistance, Escape). In these harsh exercises, brave men and women were introduced to the sorts of barbarism that they might expect to meet at the hands of a lawless foe who disregarded the Geneva Conventions. But it was something that Americans were being trained to resist, not to inflict.Exploring this narrow but deep distinction, on a gorgeous day last May I found myself deep in the hill country of western North Carolina, preparing to be surprised by a team of extremely hardened veterans who had confronted their country's enemies in highly arduous terrain all over the world. They knew about everything from unarmed combat to enhanced interrogation and were going to show me as nearly as possible what real waterboarding might be like.Hitchens undergoing his first waterboarding session. A 16-year-old was arrested for wearing the shirt and was charged with offensive behaviour under the Summary Offences Act 2005 for public nuisance. Police conducted inquiries at Australia Fair, where the teen said he bought the shirt, to find any shops selling it.Reverend Matt Hunt said it was sad people spoke about the Lord in such a way. "It's fairly common language these days to express sadness, anger or hurt," he said. "It's a degrading word to use and Jesus is anything but that.
Think Progress writes:[Last] weekend, Pixar's latest film "WALL-E" debuted at No. 1, earning $65 million at the box office. The film has been hailed by critics, scoring a whopping 97 percent "Fresh" rating on RottenTomatoes. The film portrays a lonely robot's quest for love, as he is left to clean up a trashed earth. Meanwhile, the over-indulged humans wait it out aboard gigantic spaceships run by a monolithic corporation-turned-government that "resemble spas for the fat and lazy." Somehow, this has outraged the radical right:Greg Pollowitz: It was like a 90-minute lecture on the dangers of over consumption, big corporations, and the destruction of the environment. Much to Disney's chagrin, I will do my part to avoid future environmental armageddon by boycotting any and all WALL-E merchandise and I hope others join my crusade.Glenn Beck: I can't wait to teach my kids how we've destroyed the Earth. Pixar is teaching. I can't wait. You know if your kid has ever come home and said, "Dad, how come we use so much styrofoam," oh, this is the movie for you.

MIKE STOBBE writes in Time:The Supreme Court's landmark ruling on gun ownership last week focused on citizens' ability to defend themselves from intruders in their homes. But research shows that surprisingly often, gun owners use the weapons on themselves.Suicides accounted for 55% of the nation's nearly 31,000 firearm deaths in 2005, the most recent year for which statistics are available from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. There was nothing unique about that year - gun-related suicides have outnumbered firearm homicides and accidents for 20 of the last 25 years. In 2005, homicides accounted for 40% of gun deaths. Accidents accounted for 3 percent. The remaining 2% included legal killings, such as when police do the shooting, and cases that involve undetermined intent.Public-health researchers have concluded that in homes where guns are present, the likelihood that someone in the home will die from suicide or homicide is much greater.Guns seized by Washington, D.C., police over the years are stored in the firearms examination section at police headquarters on March 18, 2008.

Nivair H. Gabriel writes on io9.com: V FOR VENDETTA by Alan Moore and David LloydThe book is probably one of the best graphic novels ever produced. Detailing the adventures of a masked anarchist and his sweet blond protégée, Moore's writing also delves far deeply beyond his two main characters into complex themes of fascism, anarchy, identity, and the meaning of life itself. Nobody is without a story to tell: Even his villains are creepily sympathetic. By the end of the comic, every reader will have at least one Lloyd image burned in their brain, and be wondering - with no small amount of fear - exactly how much control their government does have.Enter the movie. For the Wachowski brothers, the boys who gave us the two-thirds-sucky Matrix trilogy, setting this story to film was easy. They just had to cut out all of the character depth, change Moore's nuanced portrayal of British fascism to the cookie-cutter Hollywood standby of Suited White Men, and (of course) turn the subtle, understated relationship of the main characters into romantic pining. But hey, at least they got the costume right.

The military shipped her body home, informing her family that she had committed suicide. The problem is, her corpse had a broken nose, black eye and loose teeth, and acid burns on her genitals (presumably to eliminate DNA evidence of rape). The bullet wound was in the wrong place for her to have shot herself, and the exit wound was the wrong size to have come from her own M-16, as the Army suggests it did. LaVena's father, a doctor, noted all of this, and has spent the past 3 years trying to get the military to investigate his daughter's death and its coverup. Chillingly, along the way he has "discovered far more stories that have matched his daughter's than he ever wanted to know. Ten other families of 'suicide' female soldiers have contacted him.
